 The difference between stipends for summer internships and salaries for fulltime jobs is shrinking or in many cases even vanishing fast as established companies and upstart ventures are hiking, even doubling, stipends at top B-schools and engineering colleges.

This is yet another battle in the war for talent that has been raging between the two categories of recruiters during the past few months.

Jombay, a talent assessment and analytics platform provider, has increased its stipends to Rs 1-1.6 lakh this year compared with Rs 50,000 it offered last year. "We do not get a lot of research-based talent and need them to work in talent assessment. The stipends therefore have to be similar to their salaries," said Mohit Gundecha, CEO and co-founder of Jombay.

"There is a huge war for talent," said Anuja Sivaram, head of operations at CodeNation. Despite offering a lakh a month, CodeNation says it is yet to hire enough interns. "Rs 1 lakh a month stipend helps in topof-the-mind recall...it helps when we compete with a Google to get students on board," said Anuja Sivaram of Code-Nation.

Several startups and e-commerce companies such as CodeNation and Jombay are paying Rs 1 lakh a month or more while others like Jombay, Foodpanda, Paytm and Snapdeal are paying Rs 1 lakh for a two-month internship stint. Established companies such as Nomura, JPMorgan, American Express, Deloitte, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and other FMCG majors have increased stipends by 10-15%.

Not only are companies doubling stipends, many are also recruiting at least twice the number of interns they hired last year. E-commerce major Flipkart has taken in 300 interns compared with 150 last year and Snapdeal will hire 60 interns this year compared with 10 in 2014.

Practo will take 35 interns this year from BITS-Pilani, National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, IIIT Hyderabad and National Institute of Design compared with just five last year.

Foodpanda is doubling its intern intake to 50. Paytm is looking at 100 interns in 2015, up from 30-40 last year.

Problem for mid-tier companies

"The large firms with established internship processes will not get impacted, but the mid-tier companies will face a problem now," said Pushpendra Priyadarshi, chairperson (placement) at IIM Lucknow. Bigwigs such as The Boston Consulting Group say there is no reason to panic.

"I doubt the startups and e-commerce companies will be a game-changer," said Suresh Subudhi, partner and director, BCG India. "We provide a career graph, value proposition and international growth." BCG hired its largest batch of 65 interns for a two-month stipend of around Rs 3
lakh.

B-school students intern in April-May and companies often pick them up a few months in advance. In engineering colleges, students start interning May onwards. Newer ventures are bristling with aggression on campuses. They view high stipends as investments rather than as cost.

"This is brand and marketing expense for us," said Jombay's Mohit Gundecha. "We are not targetting students so they accept our pre-placement offers, but because we want them to talk about our company within their network."
